Einride/Amazon Semi, LG Lansing LFP, Unitree listing

Sources (7)

Three parallel threads. Amazon's backing firms up commercial demand for the Semi by a notch. The LFP cell supply chain for the Megapack 3 is landing in North America, which reduces tail risk. And the scarcity premium on Optimus is being eroded by Unitree, its Chinese rival, at a $66 billion valuation. All three are narrative-level updates, not valuation-level turning points.

Key evidence

  • Einride's first SEC filing discloses that Amazon holds warrants over about 12% of its equity, vesting in tranches as Amazon buys freight services from Einride (GeekWire, TechCrunch, 19 Aug).
  • Einride's 500 Semis will be deployed on its Saga platform to serve Amazon and other customers, with deliveries in tranches over 24 months from September (about 20 a month).
  • LG Energy Solution's Lansing plant in Michigan began production on 19 Aug. The investment is more than $2 billion, full capacity is 35GWh a year, and the plant is dedicated to LFP energy-storage cells.
  • LG had previously signed a KRW 6 trillion (about $4.3 billion) contract to supply Tesla with energy-storage cells, mainly for the Megapack 3 (InsideEVs and others).
  • Tesla's energy storage business had a Q2 gross margin of 20.4% against 16.3% for automotive, making it the highest-margin and fastest-growing business.
  • On its first day of trading in Shanghai (18-19 Aug), China's Unitree surged about 629%, valuing the company at about $66 billion (Benzinga).
  • The Optimus line being converted at Fremont targets 1 million units a year, but Musk admits the production ramp is hard. Prediction markets give only about a 14.5% probability of commercialisation by year-end.

Catalysts to watch

  • Einride's Semi deliveries start in tranches from September (a 24-month cycle)
  • The pace of the LG Lansing plant's ramp-up, which would support Megapack 3 volumes
  • Optimus's commercialisation timetable against the product and production progress of rivals such as Unitree

Risks

  • Amazon only holds warrants and is not buying trucks directly, nor is it the only customer. The Semi unit price and the volume of Amazon freight to be carried are undisclosed.
  • 500 Semis over 24 months is about 20 a month, which is no turning point for capacity.
  • Part of Lansing's capacity goes to LG's own Vertech and to AI data-centre customers, so how output is allocated needs watching.
  • 35GWh is the design ceiling, not current output, and ramping to full capacity takes time.
  • De-risking the supply chain does not change near-term earnings quality: Q2 operating margin of about 1% and negative free cash flow.
  • More and stronger competitors are entering the humanoid robot field, eroding Optimus's scarcity premium.
