Meta Muse: about 50 companies see almost no agent sales
- Bad news: Frontline feedback from about 50 companies is that agent transaction volume is close to zero, outweighing Meta's own claims of more than 10 million activations.
- Mixed: Reach is widening, with Insurify's agent gateway and Shopify's Shop Pay integration, but Shopify keeps checkout, payments and the shopper's identity.
- Bad news: Meta has declined to give usage and transaction data beyond its earnings call; a third-party estimate puts US daily users at about 2.5 million.
What we watchWhether Meta publishes Muse weekly or daily active users and official transaction value.

Meta Muse's reach is expanding fast (Insurify's agent gateway, Shopify's Shop Pay integration, Amazon softening its stance), but frontline feedback from about 50 companies in earnings coverage is that the transaction volume agents bring is currently close to zero:

negligible at Hilton, nothing meaningful at T-Mobile, very low at Ally, very small at eBay, and only a single-digit percentage increase at Chipotle. Meta claims more than 10 million activations, more than 25% using it for shopping and average orders above $200, yet merchants barely notice it, because few people use it consistently (a third-party estimate puts US daily active users at about 2.5 million). There is no evidence yet that its distribution advantage converts into transactions. The key is whether official figures for Muse weekly or daily active users and transaction value appear. Today's verdict leans weaker.
Key evidence
- WIRED, 31 Oct, drawing on earnings calls and interviews: Hilton says agent bookings are negligible, T-Mobile has seen nothing meaningful, Ally Financial calls it very low and eBay very, very small
- Agent-initiated membership cancellations at Life Time are zero, and Public Storage and Hartford are similar, so fears that Muse would help users cancel subscriptions in bulk have not materialised yet
- Chipotle's chief digital officer: agent orders rose only a single-digit percentage after Muse launched, and agents often get stuck on membership discounts and orders placed outside opening hours
- IHG's CEO: still talking to Meta, with no conclusion yet on what a partnership would look like or whether there will be one
- Bank of America warned customers this week that they are responsible for the consequences of giving login details to an AI assistant
- Meta's official figures: more than 10 million activations, more than 25% using it for shopping, and average orders above $200

- A third-party estimate puts US daily active users at about 2.5 million
- Insurify press release, 28 Oct: it launched an agent gateway that gives OpenAI Dots, Meta Muse and Instinct real-time insurance quotes (blocked first, then opened up)
- Amazon reversed course on 29 Oct and said it will work with outside agents (the second case of blocking first and then opening up conditionally)
- Shopify Fall 26 Edition (28 Oct): users can find products in Muse, confirm purchases and check out with Shop Pay. Muse is listed first in the official press release
- Shopify merchants can connect their stores to Muse to manage products, inventory and discounts
- But for the ability to buy any brand through Shop Pay, not limited to Shopify stores, the official page lists only Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct, not Muse
Catalysts to watch
- Whether Meta publishes Muse weekly or daily active users and official transaction value
- More merchants moving from blocking to opening up through agent gateways (insurance, hotels, retail)
- Whether Muse gets Shop Pay access beyond Shopify stores
- Whether top customers such as IHG sign up as partners
Risks
- Agent transaction volume is currently close to zero: frontline feedback from about 50 companies outweighs Meta's official claims
- Meta has limited bargaining power on the Shopify line: checkout, payments and the user's shopping identity all stay with Shopify, putting pressure on Zuckerberg's vision of transaction fees outgrowing advertising
- Agent gateways treat all agents alike, so Meta's distribution advantage buys no special treatment from merchants
- Public warnings from financial institutions such as Bank of America about users' liability when using AI assistants may deter authorisation of high-value transactions
- Meta has declined to provide usage and transaction data beyond its earnings call, so transparency is poor
