SpaceX: Anthropic contract grows, environmental suit goes on

Sources (9)
  • Mixed: The Anthropic contract grew from $1.25 billion a month to about $3.1 billion, but enters a termination window in early 2027, the unit's biggest single risk.
  • Bad news: On 30 Oct a Mississippi court rejected SpaceX's motion to dismiss the environmental suit against its superintelligence unit.
  • Bad news: October saw only about 11 orbital launches, a clear slowdown as Falcon 9 launches in Florida paused for the first Starship flight.

What we watchJan and Mar 2027: whether the Anthropic contract is renewed when its termination window opens.

The Anthropic contract SpaceX disclosed to the SEC has grown from $1.25 billion a month to $3.1 billion (2.48x), and it enters a termination window in early 2027, the biggest single risk for the superintelligence unit. On 30 Oct a Mississippi court rejected SpaceX's motion to dismiss the environmental suit against the unit, so the case goes on.

October saw only about 11 orbital launches, a clear slowdown, as Falcon 9 launches in Florida paused to make way for the first Starship flight. Musk announced a target of 10,000 Starship launches a year from the Louisiana Starport, where the bottleneck shifts from rockets to airspace and local communities. Google's Suncatcher prototype satellite completed its first in-orbit AI inference on 30 Oct, with SpaceX as its launch provider.

Key evidence

  • SpaceX's 1 Jun reply to SEC questions (EDGAR correspondence): the Anthropic contract is not filed as a material contract exhibit because either side can terminate on 90 days' notice and the compute can be reassigned to other customers
  • Under the original prospectus terms, the contract was $1.25 billion a month to May 2029, about $44-46 billion in total. Anthropic's 26 Oct listing filing shows the contract amended several times to a maximum of $120.5 billion, at about $3.1 billion a month at full capacity (2.48x), with the non-cancellable period extended to Jan and Mar 2027 (Cape Fear Advisors, 31 Oct)
  • Customer B already accounts for 34.5% of SpaceX's third-quarter revenue
  • On 30 Oct the federal court for the Northern District of Mississippi issued an opinion rejecting the motion by SpaceX's superintelligence unit to dismiss the suit (CNBC, 31 Oct). The dispute concerns 27 gas turbines run without permits in Southaven from Aug to Dec 2025
  • The court held that the gas turbines are not mobile sources exempt from permitting. Two weeks earlier the same court had refused the Justice Department's request to drop the case
  • On the evening of 30 Oct Pacific time, Starlink 15-18 launched 27 V2 Mini satellites from Vandenberg, on booster B1093's 18th flight and the 700th Falcon 9 launch (Spaceflight Now)

  • About 11 orbital launches in October, well below the late-2025 peak (Universe Discovery). Falcon 9 launches in Florida paused to make way for the first Starship launch from LC-39A
  • On 28 Oct Musk said on X that 10,000 Starship launches a year would come only from the Louisiana Starport. SpaceX told the FAA in a filing that the current air traffic system is the bottleneck for high-frequency launches
  • Louisiana Starport: announced on 25 Aug, a $100 billion investment, 125,000 acres and at least 10 launch pads, with construction starting in 2027 and a first launch in 2029 at the earliest. The local community of Pecan Island, about 130 people, is strongly opposed (Globe and Mail, 31 Oct)
  • On 30 Oct Google announced that a data-centre-grade TPU on its Suncatcher prototype satellite, launched by SpaceX on 1 Oct, completed its first in-orbit inference and sent the result back to the ground (posted by Pichai)

Catalysts to watch

  • Jan and Mar 2027: the Anthropic contract enters its termination window, and whether it is renewed decides the superintelligence unit's biggest single risk
  • Starship Flight 15, targeted for mid-Nov: sets the pace of Starlink capacity expansion and V3 deployment
  • Further rulings in the Mississippi environmental suit: fines, operating limits or re-applying for permits would all affect the pace of compute delivery
  • Progress on FAA airspace reform and local permits for the Louisiana Starport

Risks

  • Anthropic accounts for 34.5% of SpaceX's third-quarter revenue, so the claim that it is not a material dependency is increasingly hard to sustain
  • If the superintelligence unit loses the environmental suit, it could face fines, operating limits or re-applying for permits, affecting compute delivery and Anthropic's performance under the contract
  • Falcon 9 is entering a contraction phase, and Starlink expansion increasingly depends on an unproven Starship cadence
  • The regulatory path for the Louisiana Starport is complex: airspace reform, local opposition and a first launch not until 2029
  • Space-based compute now has a competitor (Google's Suncatcher), though so far it is only a small demonstration on a single satellite
