Wholly owned sales subsidiary registered in Vietnam, and US EV share back to 52% on shrinking volumes

On distribution: on 11 Sep Tesla registered a wholly owned LLC, Tesla Motors Vietnam, in Ho Chi Minh City (registered capital of about $3 million). That moves Vietnam from grey-market parallel imports to preparing for official import and distribution. It is a directional move to widen the TAM, but not yet delivery:

there is no launch date, model, pricing, store or charging plan. On competition: from January to August 2026, Tesla's share of the US EV market went from 43% back to 52% (the highest since early 2024). Yet over the same period Tesla's US sales were 325,351 vehicles, down 16% year on year (about 62,000 fewer sold), and the whole EV market was down 30%. The recovery in share came from traditional carmakers retreating en masse and ceding ground after the $7,500 tax credit ended, not from Tesla winning customers back. The share is real. The growth is not. The centre of gravity of the story has been pushed, by default, towards the $99-a-month FSD subscription (tied to buying a car since February), with high-margin software offsetting low-margin vehicles.

Key evidence

  • Vietnamese business registration: Tesla Motors Vietnam LLC was registered on 11 Sep with registered capital of about VND 77.7 billion (about $3 million).
  • Scope of business: wholesale and retail of vehicles and parts, plus import, export and distribution. Registered address: Me Linh Point Tower (Ho Chi Minh City).
  • Chairman David Jon Feinstein (a US national with an Austin address) and general manager Isabel Ching Fan.
  • Until now Tesla owners in Vietnam have relied on grey-market parallel imports, and the local market is dominated by VinFast.
  • This continues the Southeast Asia push by sister company SpaceX, which earlier won a Starlink licence in Vietnam.
  • Tesla's share of the US EV market in January to August 2026 was about 52% (43% in the same period last year, and as low as 41% in 2025).

  • Over the same period Tesla's US sales were 325,351 vehicles, down 16% year on year, about 62,000 fewer than a year earlier.
  • The whole US EV market was down about 30% year on year.
  • The 9-percentage-point recovery in share came mainly from traditional carmakers cutting back their EV product lines en masse after the federal $7,500 tax credit ended.
  • Since February, the $99-a-month FSD subscription has only been available by buying a car, so vehicle sales have become the entry point to the software subscription funnel.

Catalysts to watch

  • Official announcement of the launch date, models, pricing, stores, service points and charging plan in Vietnam
  • Q3 US delivery numbers and ASP
  • Progress on official channels in other Southeast Asian markets (Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia)
  • Disclosure of FSD subscription penetration and ARPU

Risks

  • Registered capital of $3 million is tiny, an outlay for setting up an outpost and not for building a plant or a network, so delivery may be slow.
  • VinFast has a clear scale advantage on home turf in Vietnam, and local competition is intense.
  • The steep year-on-year fall in absolute US sales is hard demand-side data, and the share lead is propped up by rivals doing worse.
  • The vehicle-sales leg is shrinking systematically, and whether software subscriptions can scale enough to offset it has yet to be proven.
