AI5/AI6 chip memory cut back to make way for Optimus production; China-market Model 3/Y upgraded with 16-inch screen and V2L

Two separate but aligned supply-side moves. (1) Musk has confirmed that AI5 memory is cut from 144GB to 72GB and AI6 from 216GB to 144GB. The stated reason is that LPDDR memory supply is the real bottleneck for Optimus production, so Tesla gives up capacity per chip to get enough chips at lower cost.

This adds a hard chip-side move to the Optimus production line already seen between 16 Sep and 1 Oct: the Ningbo supply-chain audits, the first 5,000-unit order and the nearly topped-out steel frame of the dedicated Giga Texas building. (2) From Q4 the whole China-market Model 3/Y line gets a 16-inch high-refresh screen, 2.2kW V2L external power output and a new interior and wheels, with extra equipment at no extra price. That hedges against the squeeze from BYD and Geely at the low and middle end, and against the double pressure of three straight monthly falls in China retail sales (-12.4% in August) and exports at -45.5%.

Key evidence

  • Musk posted on X on 1 Oct: AI5 memory goes from 144GB to 72GB (LPDDR5) and AI6 from 216GB to 144GB (LPDDR6), with a negligible effect on Optimus performance, he said (Newsquawk, Electrek, 24-7WallSt and Sawyer Merritt, all drawing on the same source).
  • 24-7WallSt's reading: halving AI5 memory is a bet that memory supply, not chip design, is the gate on Optimus output.
  • AI5 volume production has already slid from the original plan to mid-2027 (reported on 21 Aug), and now the spec has changed again, which means the hardware roadmap is moving the goalposts once more.
  • The same AI5 chip has to serve three lines: FSD, Robotaxi and Optimus. That the memory cut is negligible for FSD inference is only Musk's own claim and needs testing in practice.
  • In the near term Cybercab can still only use AI4.5.
  • At Giga Shanghai the Model 3 centre screen goes from 15.4 inches to a 16-inch high-refresh screen (the same as the global Model Y).
Show 4 more
  • The whole Model 3/Y range gains V2L external AC power output of up to 2.2kW, with the adapter sold separately for RMB 599.
  • Also new are a light grey Zen Gray interior, a black headliner and 19-inch Dark Nova wheels.
  • The US market is excluded. The changes apply only to markets supplied by the Shanghai plant, such as China, Australia and New Zealand, and South Korea, with deliveries taking effect from Q4.
  • Background: domestic retail sales in China have fallen three months in a row (-12.4% in August), and exports have been crushed by BYD (-45.5% in August).

Catalysts to watch

  • Q3 delivery data, released pre-market (US Eastern) on 2 Oct
  • Q4 China Model 3/Y deliveries, to test whether the added equipment can halt the sales decline
  • The pace of Optimus production (Ningbo supply chain, the dedicated Giga Texas building, the first 5,000-unit order)
  • Whether the mid-2027 AI5 production milestone slips again
  • Roadster unveiling on 15 Oct

Risks

  • The real effect of halving AI5 memory on FSD inference performance rests only on Musk's own claim, with no independent testing
  • The AI5 production milestone has already slipped from the original AI4-to-AI5 timing to mid-2027, and a change of spec now means the hardware roadmap is moving the goalposts again
  • It is unproven whether adding equipment without raising prices will really stop China sales falling, and a bigger screen and V2L alone are unlikely to withstand a price war
  • The China upgrade does little to lift overall ASP or gross margin
  • The regional differentiation (the US does not get the China upgrade) means the upgrade is not global and protects only the China business
