Shanghai's July wholesales hit a year high but rely on exports, FSD reaches 1.3 billion cumulative miles and 1.5 million monthly active users…
The so-called recovery in China is really Shanghai turning into a global export hub, while domestic retail has fallen for three years running and BYD is eating into share. FSD numbers are rising but are still a small fraction of the 10 million subscription target (just 15%).

Tesla has made a clear choice between a smarter FSD and more user control, and it has picked the former. The disconnect between the share price ($322 close, $1.3 trillion market value, forward P/E of about 140x) and the fundamentals (Q2 gross margin of 16.3%, operating margin of 1.4%, negative FCF) is unchanged.
Key evidence
- Shanghai plant's July wholesales were 93,579 vehicles (YoY +37.85%, MoM +5%), the highest this year and the ninth straight month of year-on-year growth
- China domestic retail in the first half was -9% YoY, down for the third year running to a multi-year low
- Exports rose to 49% of Shanghai output (28% a year earlier), and June exports jumped 257.6%
- Q2 deliveries in China were 126,157 vehicles (YoY -2.05%, a fifth straight quarterly decline). China's share of global deliveries fell to 26.28%, below 30% for the first time since 2020.
- FSD cumulative mileage is 1.3 billion miles (500 million of them on city streets). Monthly active users are about 1.5 million (in line with the 1.48 million active subscriptions in Q2, +56% QoQ).
- The board's pay target is anchored on 10 million FSD subscriptions, of which only 15% has been reached (and it is unclear whether free trials are included)

- AI head Ashok Elluswamy explicitly rejected restoring the manual Max Speed setting for FSD, arguing that letting the system decide for itself is safer
- Europe has launched a 2-month free FSD trial to lift take-up
- The 10 millionth vehicle has rolled off the line
- TSLA closed at about $322 on Tuesday (+3.49%), with a market value of about $1.3 trillion and an implied forward P/E of about 140x
Catalysts to watch
- Shanghai's export engine keeps getting bigger. Tighter tariff or geopolitical policy would hit this cash flow directly.
- FSD subscription growth: going from 1.5 million to 10 million needs 6.7x, and any pause along the way would puncture the pay narrative.
- Conversion data from the free trial in Europe (over the next 1-2 months)
- Carving out the China business before a merger: Shanghai is the export hub, so cutting it off would do serious damage
Risks
- Domestic retail in China has fallen for three years running and BYD and others keep eating into share. If geopolitics hits the export story, there will be nowhere to hide.
- Fundamentals (Q2 gross margin of 16.3%, operating margin of 1.4%, negative FCF) are disconnected from a forward P/E of about 140x.
- Refusing users a manual override on FSD may anger some long-time owners in the short term and could hurt renewals.
- Progress towards the 10 million FSD subscription target is only 15%, so the risk of missing the board's pay-package target is high.
