Three new developments in the week after results: shares fall below sell-side consensus, the CFO concedes a structural margin decline…

HIMS has not bounced since Q2 results. Instead it has drifted steadily lower, falling about another 11% in a week (from $30.51 on 11 Aug to $28.15 on 14 Aug), dropping below the $29 average sell-side target for the first time, and is down 40% over the past year. There are three new developments. (1) The market has voted with its feet:

the revenue beat, the guidance raise and the peptide narrative could not offset the collapse in profits, and the 'revenue beat but margin darker' verdict is still being priced in. (2) CFO Okupe said on the call that the gross margin decline is structural, not transitional. The company has acknowledged that low-margin branded GLP-1s and the consolidation of Eucalyptus's international business mean long-term gross margin will stay below historical levels and cannot climb back to 76%. (3) TIKR's own medium-term model gives a $29 target for December 2030, a total return of just 5% over 4.4 years, or 1% a year. The core debate has not changed (fast revenue growth against structurally compressed gross margin, a swing to losses and FTC legal provisions), but this week's new signals are the market pushing the share price below consensus and the CFO conceding that gross margin will stay lower for the long term. The next proof point is still whether Q4 delivers the profit jump.

Key evidence

  • Share price over the week: $30.51 on 11 Aug, $29.97 on 12 Aug, $28.77 on 13 Aug and $28.15 on 14 Aug; down 11% on the week and 40% over the past year
  • Below sell-side consensus for the first time: the current $28.15 is under the $29 consensus average target (the shares had held above $30 throughout the previous week)
  • CFO Okupe said on the call (as quoted by TIKR) that as branded weight-loss drugs and international revenue make up a larger share, the company expects gross margin to stay below historical levels. The company is calling it a structural decline
  • Source of the margin squeeze: low-margin branded GLP-1s and the consolidation of Eucalyptus's international business
  • Q2 results: revenue up 38%, but a net loss of $86.3 million and a loss of $0.37 a share against a consensus loss of only $0.01
  • Q2 gross margin 64%, down 12pp year on year (against a historical 76%)
Show 5 more
  • TIKR medium-term model: a $29 target for December 2030, implying a total return of just 5% over the next 4.4 years, or 1% a year
  • Sell-side split (TIKR data): 1 Buy, 2 Outperform, 11 Hold, 1 Underperform, 1 not rated; the $29 average target is only about 5% above the share price
  • Valuation: about 55x forward P/E
  • The shares are more than 60% below the year's high of $70.43
  • The core debate is unchanged: fast revenue growth against structural gross margin compression, a swing to losses and FTC legal provisions

Catalysts to watch

  • Q4 results: whether the profit jump comes through is the next proof point
  • Whether gross margin settles at a structural floor or keeps falling
  • Changes in the branded GLP-1 share of revenue and its marginal drag on gross margin
  • Progress integrating Eucalyptus's international business
  • How FTC legal provisions develop from here
  • Whether the $29 sell-side consensus target is cut further

Risks

  • The CFO has officially described gross margin as structurally lower for the long term: 76% is no longer a level it can return to, so the valuation anchor moves down
  • The shares falling below sell-side consensus for the first time means the market is more bearish than analysts, with a risk of consensus cuts
  • TIKR's medium-term model of 1% a year implies that even on optimistic growth assumptions, long-term shareholder returns are close to zero
  • 38% revenue growth still produced an $86.3 million net loss; the core problem of growth disconnected from profit is unresolved
  • A 55x forward P/E for a structurally loss-making business: valuation and fundamentals are badly mismatched
  • Down 40% over the past year and 60% below the year's high: the technical downtrend is intact
