Optimus production audit in Ningbo, and first wave of the European Megacharger network announced
2 moves forward on the supply side. (1) The audit of the Optimus supply chain for production consistency has reached Ningbo for the first time, locking in a target of about 50,000 units of output in 2026. It is the first annual output figure to anchor on, but output is not sales and the source is mostly second-hand.

(2) The first wave of the European Megacharger network, 21 sites in 7 countries with more than 100 chargers at 1.2 MW, lays the power for Semi's European deliveries in 2027. It moves from having the vehicle to having a supporting charging network, but there is no construction timetable. Both are gradual, sentiment-level positives on the supply and infrastructure side, not delivery, and carry little weight.
Key evidence
- Optimus: Tesla's robotics team arrived in Ningbo, Zhejiang on 16 Sep to begin a new round of production supply-chain audits. Publicly, the audits check the exclusivity and consistency of production, with a target of about 50,000 units of output in 2026, and related supply-chain concept stocks in the A-share market surged (BigGo Finance, ChainCatcher, 17 Sep).
- On the supply side, Optimus follows on from the start of production at Fremont on 28 Aug and Virtuix's repeat omnidirectional treadmill orders on 17 Sep, moving from starting up the production line and buying training peripherals to auditing the mass-production supply chain for consistency. 50,000 units is the first annual output figure to appear as an anchor.
- Caveats on Optimus: the 50,000 units is an internal output target and not external sales, which does not contradict the official line of 21 Aug that external commercial sales will begin no earlier than the second half of 2027. The news comes from second-hand Chinese crypto and financial sources, with no official confirmation from Tesla seen. Musk habitually pushes back production timetables.
- Megacharger: in a keynote at the IAA Hannover commercial vehicle show, Tesla announced the first wave of its European Megacharger network: 21 sites in 7 countries, more than 100 chargers, with up to 1.2 MW per charger, and Semi can charge to 60% in about half an hour (electrive, InsideEVs and Electric Viking, 16-17 Sep).
- Megacharger follows the European Semi website specifications of 12 Sep and the 2027 first-delivery date, filling in dedicated European charging infrastructure. The 1.2 MW rating matches North America's and leaves headroom for the future.
- Caveats on Megacharger: Tesla has given no timetable at all for building the network, European Semi deliveries themselves only start in 2027, and the infrastructure is still on paper. The European Semi tops out at 800 kW, so 1.2 MW is spare hardware capacity and not currently usable.
Catalysts to watch
- Progress against the 2026 Optimus output target of 50,000 units (results of the Ningbo supply-chain consistency checks)
- Tesla's own public statement on the 50,000-unit figure (currently second-hand sources only)
- Official disclosure of the timetable for building the European Megacharger network
- First European Semi deliveries in 2027 and the date the supporting charging network goes live
Risks
- Output of 50,000 Optimus units is not sales, as external commercial sales only start in the second half of 2027, and output does not mean monetisation.
- The sources are mostly second-hand (Chinese crypto and financial media) and Tesla has not confirmed them officially, so they need a discount.
- Musk consistently pushes back production timetables, so delivery of 50,000 units is in doubt (the reports themselves point this out).
- There is no construction timetable for the European Megacharger network, and the infrastructure is still paper planning.
- The European Semi's hardware limit is 800 kW, so the 1.2 MW chargers are spare capacity and not currently usable.
- These carry less weight than regulatory or demand-side catalysts and are a sentiment-level increment.
