ZET SCALE orders 2,500 Semis, Optimus Gen 3 leaks in app code, Grok Bot arrives in cars to run errands

Three threads moved on the same day. Semi has gone from capacity and spec anchors to a real demand order: 2,500 units, the largest electric Class 8 order in the US, with Microsoft and Pepsi among the shippers.

The Optimus Gen 3 design has leaked for the first time through code in Tesla's official app, pointing to a ramp in which the old and new generations coexist. Grok Bot is now live in the car and can handle email, calendar and shopping, moving in-car AI from 'controlling the car' to 'an agent gateway tied to your account'. Weighting: the Semi order is a gradual positive on the demand side, though not yet delivered, while Optimus and Grok add to sentiment and narrative only.

Key evidence

  • Semi: Tesla has been chosen as the main OEM for ZET SCALE, a shipper coalition whose founding members include Microsoft and Pepsi. The single order is for 2,500 electric Class 8 trucks, which on the official account would 'nearly double the US electric Class 8 fleet'. It is the largest order on paper so far and a new anchor for scale.
  • This follows the European Semi website specs and 2027 delivery date (12 Sep) and the unveiling of the Nevada plant, built for 50,000 trucks a year (24 Sep). It moves Semi up a notch, from 'having a truck and charging' to 'having real large-order demand'.
  • Semi caveats: an order is not a delivery. Of Einride's 500-truck order, only about 75 trucks are due in 2026. At current capacity, the 2,500 trucks would take several years to work through. No delivery schedule, unit price or first-batch size has been disclosed. The early ramp at the Nevada plant is the real bottleneck.
  • Optimus: @wholemars extracted robot UI assets from the APK of Tesla's official Android app. They include renders of both Gen 2.5 and Gen 3, the first public visual clue to Gen 3. These are official design assets from Tesla's engineering team, not a third-party concept.
  • This follows the production audits of three suppliers in Ningbo, China (18-19 Sep) and a first production order of about 5,000 units. The app bundling assets for both generations points to an interface that manages old and new robots side by side.
  • Optimus caveats: these are only UI render assets in the app, not a physical unit and not confirmation of mass production. Musk has a habit of pushing Optimus timelines back. The official line puts external commercial sales no earlier than the second half of 2027.

  • Grok Bot: Tesla's official X account announced that Grok Bot is coming to the in-car system, moving from 'answering questions and adjusting the air conditioning' to 'carrying out outside tasks for you'. It can check email, manage the calendar, place online orders and recap conversations, all hands-free while driving.
  • This follows in-car navigation, location reminders and voice control of the car. The car turns from a tool into an agent gateway. Together with the FSD subscription and Optimus, it belongs to the 'physical AI platform' story, and it raises the cost of switching cars.
  • Grok Bot caveats: Tesla has not said whether it will charge for it or put it behind a subscription, so there is no direct revenue for now. Linking external accounts raises privacy and security questions, plus the question of regulatory responsibility for tasks handled while the car is moving. It is a product feature addition, not yet a delivered result.
  • A fundamentals addition: FSD v14.2 Lite has started rolling out to HW3 Model S/X cars, confirming that existing HW3 vehicles can only get a cut-down version. This echoes the core argument of the Dutch collective claim by nearly 7,000 people over HW3, and the problem of tiered hardware continues.

Catalysts to watch

  • Delivery schedule and unit price for the 2,500-truck ZET SCALE Semi order
  • Progress in ramping the Nevada Semi plant to 50,000 trucks a year
  • Official event showing the physical Optimus Gen 3 and its specifications
  • External commercial sales of Optimus starting in the second half of 2027
  • Announcement of a subscription or charging model for Grok Bot
  • Developments in the Dutch HW3 collective claim

Risks

  • The Semi order exists mainly on paper, and at current capacity actual deliveries would be spread over several years
  • Optimus design assets are far ahead of production, and Musk's timelines have a history of slipping
  • Grok Bot's exposure on privacy, security and regulatory responsibility from linking to external accounts and handling tasks while driving
  • The HW3 hardware tiering problem, and the risk that the Dutch collective action spreads to other regions
