Against Q3 revenue of $14.575 billion, the signed book for the year ahead is roughly three quarters' worth of revenue, a material step-up in revenue visibility. Aviation: Shotwell says about 12,000 aircraft are contracted (about 25% of the global available fleet), against only 3,800-plus installed at quarter end. Aviation terminal production is up 4x year to date and targets another 2x by year-end. The roughly 8,000 aircraft contracted but not yet installed are a contracted backlog that converts into Enterprise and Government revenue (up 91% year on year in Q3). The constraint is production, not demand. Starlink Mobile (direct-to-cell) reached 22 million MAU, up 37% quarter on quarter, with growth from newly opened markets such as Uganda and Kazakhstan. Note that the metric is MAU, which is not comparable with the earlier figure of about 7.4 million devices on the website or with VEON's 11 million 'connected at least once'. The definitions differ, so do not mix them. Consumer broadband net adds of 1.6 million in Q3 came mostly from developed markets, consistent with ARPU recovering to $69 quarter on quarter; customer acquisition in developing markets is weaker than expected. V3 and Starship cadence (management guidance): Shotwell says 'several hundred' V3 satellites must be deployed before users feel the speed-up, expected by mid-2027. SpaceX will attempt on-orbit refuelling in 2027, and second-generation direct-to-cell satellites and Starmind orbital-compute satellites begin deployment in 2027. Musk guides to weekly Starship flights in H1 2027 and 2 or more a week by the end of 2027. Flight 15 (November) will attempt a dual-stage tower catch, and Musk himself puts the odds at 'slightly better than 50/50'. In Q3, SpaceX accounted for 90% of global mass to orbit (476 tonnes in total). The long-term plan for the new Louisiana spaceport is more than 20 launch towers. The implication: the V3 boost to user experience slips to mid-2027. Until then the consumer side depends on installed V2 capacity, so ARPU and net-add pressure will not vanish quickly. Attribution of the Ukraine Starshield geofence is hardening. Secretary of State Rubio said on 21 Oct that access control lies with SpaceX, and sources cited by CBS and The Hill confirm that the kill-switch (any terminal moving faster than 160 km/h is disconnected, specifically targeting drones) was Musk's personal order. The NYT reported on 21 Oct that Ukrainian drones fell en masse during the cutoff, and Sweden's Ovzon is pitching a 'sovereign autonomy' alternative in the opening. If the framing of a unilateral company decision sticks, Starshield's 'reliable contractor' positioning weakens and the political case for European replacements (Bromo, IRIS²) strengthens. European ground infrastructure is now a target of Russian hybrid warfare. Poland attributes the September fire at a Starlink gateway near Warsaw to Russian intelligence (2 Turkish nationals arrested), following an attempted arson in Lithuania. Antennas were also attacked in Bulgaria, and NATO's SACEUR has responded publicly (Business Insider, 21 Oct). Gateway physical security becomes a new opex and risk line, though no service disruptions have been reported yet.

Key evidence

  • First-ever backlog disclosure (an earnings-call figure, unaudited): $63 billion of undelivered contract value
  • Of the $63 billion backlog, $42 billion is expected to convert to revenue in the next 12 months
  • Q3 revenue was $14.575 billion, so the $42 billion signed book for the next 12 months equals about 3 quarters' worth of revenue, materially raising visibility
  • Shotwell: about 12,000 aircraft contracted for Starlink aviation (about 25% of the global available fleet)
  • The aviation installed base was only 3,800-plus at quarter end, leaving about 8,000 contracted aircraft waiting to be installed
  • Aviation terminal production is up 4x year to date, targeting another 2x by year-end
Show 18 more
  • Enterprise and Government revenue rose 91% YoY in Q3; the ramp in the aviation installed base is the identified driver
  • Starlink Mobile (direct-to-cell): 22 million monthly active users, up 37% QoQ
  • Mobile growth drivers: the newly opened markets of Uganda and Kazakhstan
  • Metric caveat: the 22 million MAU is not the same metric as the roughly 7.4 million devices (website) or VEON's 11 million 'connected at least once'. Do not mix definitions
  • Consumer broadband net adds were 1.6 million in Q3, mostly from developed markets (consistent with ARPU recovering to $69 QoQ); customer acquisition in developing markets is weaker than expected
  • Shotwell: 'several hundred' V3 satellites are needed before users feel the speed-up, expected by mid-2027
  • 2027: SpaceX attempts on-orbit refuelling, and second-generation direct-to-cell satellites and Starmind orbital-compute satellites start deploying
  • Musk: Starship to reach a weekly flight cadence in H1 2027, and 2 or more a week by the end of 2027
  • Flight 15 (November): a dual-stage tower catch is planned; Musk puts the odds of success at 'slightly better than 50/50'
  • In Q3, SpaceX accounted for 90% of global mass to orbit (476 tonnes in total)
  • Long-term plan for the new Louisiana spaceport: more than 20 launch towers
  • Secretary of State Rubio (21 Oct): Starshield access control lies with SpaceX
  • CBS and The Hill: sources confirm Musk personally ordered the Ukraine Starshield kill-switch. Terminals moving faster than 160 km/h are cut off (the geofence is designed to disable drones)
  • NYT (21 Oct): Ukrainian drones fell in large numbers during the Starshield cutoff
  • Sweden's Ovzon is using the moment to pitch 'sovereign autonomy' as an alternative
  • Poland attributes the September fire at a Starlink gateway near Warsaw to Russian intelligence; 2 Turkish nationals have been arrested
  • An earlier arson attempt in Lithuania, antenna attacks in Bulgaria and a public response from NATO's SACEUR establish European ground infrastructure as a target of Russian hybrid warfare
  • No Starlink service disruptions from the European gateway attacks have been reported to date

Catalysts to watch

  • Flight 15 (November 2026): dual-stage tower catch attempt, with Musk's odds slightly above 50%
  • The ramp in the aviation installed base against the contracted backlog of 8,000 aircraft over the coming quarters
  • Starship targets: weekly cadence in H1 2027, and 2 or more a week by the end of 2027
  • Mid-2027: deployment of 'several hundred' V3 satellites, the threshold for a speed improvement users can see
  • 2027: on-orbit refuelling attempt
Show 3 more
  • 2027: deployment begins for second-generation direct-to-cell and Starmind orbital-compute satellites
  • Consumer broadband strategy in developing markets: if net-add weakness persists, a response on pricing or terminal subsidies is possible
  • Political momentum for the European replacement programmes Bromo and IRIS² after the Ukraine geofence attribution

Risks

  • The backlog figure is earnings-call commentary, not audited, and the definition of 'undelivered contract value' was not disclosed
  • Aviation installation is production-constrained; delays in terminal manufacturing stretch out revenue conversion
  • Starlink Mobile's 22 million MAU is not comparable with historical device or 'ever-connected' counts, so year-on-year or industry comparisons can mislead
  • V3 slipping to mid-2027 keeps consumer ARPU and net-add pressure in place for roughly another 6-9 months
  • The Flight 15 dual-stage tower catch is a binary catalyst with stated odds of about 50%. A failure would reset the Starship cadence narrative
Show 3 more
  • If the 'Musk personally ordered' framing of the Ukraine kill-switch becomes the consensus, Starshield's 'reliable contractor' positioning weakens and the political case for Bromo and IRIS² strengthens
  • Physical attacks on European ground infrastructure add a new opex line (hardening, security) and operational risk. Service disruption so far is zero, but any future gateway outage will be read against this backdrop
  • Weakness in consumer broadband in developing markets could cap the long-tail subscriber TAM narrative
