3-5 year long-term contracts, Samsung overtakes in HBM, CXMT turns down orders, Rubin Ultra HBM4, Anthropic prospectus
In a closed-door session, Micron's management disclosed that long-term contracts have lengthened from 1 year to 3-5 years, that talks on 2031 contracts have begun, and that price floors sit above the previous cycle's peak. That is the hardest evidence that this cycle is different.

Samsung's HBM revenue may already have overtaken SK Hynix's, which raises share and pricing pressure on third-placed Micron. CXMT's refusal of orders from Apple and an overseas server maker is positive for Micron's overseas pricing but erodes its share in China. The Rubin Ultra 8-high HBM4 timetable points to volume production in Q2 2027, and whether Micron is on the supplier list is yet to be confirmed. Anthropic's prospectus lists HBM as a risk, which supports the long-term contract logic from the buyer's side.
Key evidence
- BofA analysts met Micron COO Bhatia, CTO DeBoer and CFO Murphy in New York and Boston in late October (as relayed by BigGo).
- Management: supply will be tighter in 2027 and 2028. Customer contracts have lengthened from 1 year or less to 3-5 years, with some covering about 5 years beyond 2030.
- Talks have begun on 2031 contracts. The target is for long-term contracts to make up 50% of sales by 2030, against about 35% now.
- New detail on the long-term contracts: they specify committed bit volumes and financial terms, and set a price floor above the previous cycle's peak.
- Management: memory configurations in GPUs and servers are being held back by supply, not by compute, packaging, power or facilities. As soon as supply loosens, customers will add memory back.
- Bernstein, using a regression on Korean export data, estimates Samsung's Q3 HBM revenue at about $8.7 billion (up 33% QoQ) and Hynix's at about $7.6 billion (up 11% QoQ).

- In September, Korean HBM exports rose 45% month on month and 131% year on year. Samsung's export value per unit of weight is about 4 times Hynix's (a reflection of product mix, not selling price).
- Micron's share is under pressure (echoing Counterpoint's estimate of 21 Oct that it has fallen from 21% to 17%).
- Wccftech (25 Oct) and Guancha.cn (26 Oct): CXMT has turned down Apple's low-price purchasing and a DDR5 order from an overseas server maker.
- Yole: about 90% of CXMT's capacity supplies Chinese brands (Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo).
- TrendForce: CXMT's monthly capacity is about 320,000 wafers, rising to about 420,000 in 2027.
- Counterpoint, Q2 DRAM revenue share: CXMT 10%, Micron 24% (share in China is being eroded).
- ZDNet Korea (26 Oct): Samsung and Hynix plan volume production of 8-high HBM4 for Rubin Ultra around Q2 2027.
- Yield and heat-dissipation problems with 12-high stacks are unresolved, but 12-high will not be dropped entirely. The report does not say whether Micron is on the 8-high supplier list.
- Blocks & Files, citing Morgan Stanley: NVIDIA will buy about 37% of the world's HBM in 2027.
- Anthropic filed its listing registration documents with the SEC on 26 Oct. Its risk factors state that HBM production is concentrated in three makers: Hynix, Samsung and Micron.
- The Taoyuan union and Micron are holding a second round of talks today at Taoyuan City Government (postponed because of a typhoon).
- Hynix reports Q3 results at 8:00 Singapore time on 28 Oct. Watch HBM4 shipments, 2027 long-term contract pricing, capital expenditure and the special dividend.
Catalysts to watch
- Micron's 10-Q or earnings call disclosing the coverage ratio of long-term contract price floors
- Hynix's results on 28 Oct (HBM4 shipments, 2027 long-term contract pricing, capital expenditure, special dividend)
- Whether Micron makes the supplier list for Rubin Ultra 8-high HBM4
- Outcome of the second round of talks between the Taoyuan union and Micron
- Further detail from Anthropic's prospectus, and the pace at which AI customers sign contracts
- Pace of HBM4 volume production in Q2 2027
Risks
- With Samsung's HBM revenue overtaking Hynix's, pricing and share pressure on third-placed Micron rises.
- Micron's HBM share is estimated to have fallen from 21% to 17% (Counterpoint).
- Share in China is being eroded by CXMT (about 90% of its capacity supplies Chinese brands).
- The coverage ratio of the long-term contract price floors has not been disclosed, so how much protection they offer is yet to be verified.
- Yield and heat-dissipation problems with 12-high HBM4 are unresolved.
- Management's statements are unaudited, so they should be discounted until they appear in an 8-K or 10-Q.
