Sources (3)
  • Good news: Robotaxi registrations in Texas reached 1,204 as of 31 Oct, up 124 in three days, all of them Model Y.
  • Mixed: Cybercab stayed at 573, as the wheel-less car faces tougher regulation, so Model Y remains the vanguard for new cities.
  • Neutral: The registration list does not show which city a vehicle is assigned to, or that it is on the road taking rides.

What we watchWhich city's service area the new Model Ys appear in first, and when Cybercab registrations rise again.

Tesla's Robotaxi fleet registered in Texas reached 1,204 vehicles as of 31 Oct. It added 124 in three days, all of them Model Y, while Cybercab stayed at 573. Model Y is back in the majority (631 vs 573). The new Model Ys are probably being lined up for service-area expansion and new cities (Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Phoenix, San Antonio).

The bottleneck appears to have moved from building cars to deploying them: Cybercab, with no steering wheel, faces tougher regulation, so Model Y is still the vanguard for expansion into new cities.

Key evidence

  • Texas DMV list of autonomous vehicles: 1,204 registered under Tesla Robotaxi on 31 Oct (tesla-mag, 31 Oct), up 124 in three days from 1,080 on 28 Oct
  • An open-source tracker comparing the Texas lists directly: Model Y up 124, Cybercab unchanged
  • Estimated split: about 631 Model Y and 573 Cybercab. Model Y is back in the majority (Cybercab first overtook Model Y on 27 Oct)
  • Model Y sat at 507 for just over a week from 22 Oct, then jumped 124 in one go. Cybercab added 222 in the week of 21-28 Oct, then stopped
  • The Houston service area has grown to 254 square miles, with only 34 Model Y and no Cybercab
  • The earnings call named the new cities: Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Phoenix and San Antonio

Catalysts to watch

  • Which city's service area the new Model Ys appear in first
  • When Cybercab registrations start rising again
  • When Robotaxi launches in the new cities (Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Phoenix, San Antonio)

Risks

  • The registration list shows only that a vehicle is cleared for driverless operation, not that it is on the road taking rides
  • It does not show which city a vehicle is assigned to
  • Registrations arrive in batches rather than at a steady daily pace, so a single day's figure cannot be extrapolated into capacity
  • Regulatory hurdles for the wheel-less Cybercab may persist, leaving expansion reliant on Model Y
